Interested undergraduate students should register
for Eng 296: Writing Practicum, Special Topic: “Small
Magazines: Aesthetics and Practice in the 20th Century,”
offered in the spring with professor Penelope Pelizzon. This class
offers a dynamic investigation of the aesthetics, history, and practice
of small magazine publication in the twentieth century. Among the
questions the class will address are: What are the influential American
small magazines of the period? What audiences have these publications
served? Who were some of the notable editors? How have small magazines,
along with anthologies, influenced literary canon formation? What
is the future of the small magazine in the digital age? Historical
and critical readings will be combined with short papers and will
culminate in the final project, production of the 2003 Long River
Review. The Dodd Research Center’s collection of Little
Magazines will provide an excellent opportunity for students to
study primary materials.
